• Autumn

Although the end of summer can be a little melancholy, Versilia in autumn reveals its more intimate side, that of changing colours and a clear sky that mirrors the beaches free from crowds. Autumn is the perfect time to savour local dishes at oil and wine festivals and feasts and festivals, to go for long strolls without the summer crowds and to experience the slow-paced life in the old towns.

Even after the last umbrella has closed on Versilia’s beaches, the weather continues to be enjoyable: neither too hot nor too cold, ideal to discover this land filled with artistic heritage and stunning landscapes.

Olive oil, wine and chestnuts

Autumn has many fruits to offer in the multifaceted landscape of Versilia. From the hills covered with silver-coloured plants olives are harvested and new oil is produced and celebrated at the festivals dedicated to the first pressings. The same applies to the bunches of grapes grown in the area and used to produce the local wine. For itineraries dedicated to these two local specialities you can follow the Wine and Oil Route of Lucca, Montecarlo and Versilia, while you can taste them at the Prim’olio Primovino fair in Camaiore.

All Saints Fair and Halloween

Camaiore is the host of the famous All Saints Fair, a major event in the area. Every year there are all sorts exhibitors in the streets of the historic centre, from handicrafts to household products and clothing along with an agricultural livestock fair. On 31 October, for Halloween, there are many festivals in Versilia for all ages: from the “scary” ones for children and families to the disco-parties with DJs and famous singers.

Via Francigena

Two legs of the Via Francigena pass through the Versilia area: one from Massa to Camaiore (leg 26) and the one from Camaiore to Lucca (leg 27). You can travel along this path on foot or by bicycle. The Via Francigena, as it passes through Versilia, touches on Pietrasanta (right after you can visit the ancient S. Giovanni parish church) and cuts through the hills to the historic centre of Camaiore and old Badia. Leg 27 starts here and goes on towards Monte Magno and Valpromaro. Of course you can walk the Francigena in any season, but autumn would be more suitable if you want to also see the red and yellow hues of nature.

Exhibitions and Museums

Are the days beginning to shorten and is the weather becoming cooler? It is time to discover a little indoor art with museums and exhibitions. In Versilia you are spoiled for choice: from Villa Paolina with its civic museums to the GAMC (Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art) in Viareggio; from the Citadel of the Carnival to the Museum of Sketches in Pietrasanta; from the Museum of Sacred Art in Camaiore to the Museum of Satire in Forte dei Marmi; from the Medici Palace to the Peace Park in Sant’Anna di Stazzema and the archaeological site of Massaciuccoli and much more!

Lucca Comics and Games

Lucca is only a few kilometres from Versilia and is also the capital of this province. The Lucca Comics & Games is an international event that attracts thousands of tourists from around the world: what better time to discover Versilia?
